Lab-Grown vs Mined Diamonds: What's the Real Difference?

Same Diamond, Different Origin

This is the most important thing to understand: lab-grown and mined diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical. They are both pure carbon crystallized in the cubic crystal structure—the same atomic arrangement, the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), the same brilliance and fire. A gemologist cannot tell them apart without specialized equipment. The only real difference is where they come from.

Formation: Billions of Years vs. A Few Weeks

Mined diamonds formed deep within the Earth mantle, 150–250 kilometers below the surface, under extreme pressure and temperatures over 1,000°C. This process took billions of years. Lab-grown diamonds replicate this same natural process using advanced technology—but in a matter of weeks, in a controlled laboratory setting.

Environmental Impact

This is where lab-grown diamonds have a clear advantage. Traditional diamond mining displaces large amounts of earth, disrupts ecosystems, and has a significant carbon footprint. Lab-grown diamonds require less land, use less water, and generate a smaller carbon footprint. At Aranc, our diamonds are grown using renewable energy whenever possible.

Ethical Sourcing

The mined diamond industry has historically been linked to conflict diamonds—stones mined in war zones and sold to finance armed conflict. While the Kimberley Process has reduced this, it does not eliminate all ethical concerns. Lab-grown diamonds are inherently conflict-free: they have a traceable origin and are never associated with human rights abuses.

Price and Value

Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 40–70% less than mined diamonds of comparable quality. This is not because they are inferior—it is because the supply chain is shorter and there is no scarcity premium built into the price. You get a bigger, better diamond for your budget.

Resale and Investment

Both mined and lab-grown diamonds depreciate after purchase. However, mined diamonds have historically held a higher resale value due to perceived rarity. Lab-grown diamond prices have also been trending downward as production scales up, which is great for buyers but less favorable for long-term value retention.

The Bottom Line

Choose a mined diamond if brand prestige and tradition matter most to you. Choose a lab-grown diamond if you prioritize ethics, sustainability, and getting more value for your money. Either way, you are getting a real, certified diamond—one that will last forever.
