IGI vs GIA: Understanding Diamond Certification

What Is a Diamond Certification?

A diamond certificate (also called a grading report) is an independent evaluation of a diamond quality. It is issued by a qualified gemological laboratory and includes a detailed analysis of the diamond 4 Cs: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight. When you buy a certified diamond, you have objective proof of what you are paying for.

At Aranc, every diamond we sell comes with a certificate from IGI or GIA—two of the most respected names in gemology.

GIA: The Gold Standard

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) was founded in 1931 and is widely regarded as the world foremost authority on diamonds. GIA invented the 4 Cs grading system and created the International Diamond Grading System, which is now the global standard.

A GIA report is considered the most prestigious and rigorous in the industry. When a jeweler says a diamond is "GIA certified," customers know they are getting an objective, trustworthy assessment. GIA grades on the strictest scale and is known for consistency across report numbers.

IGI: Trusted and Widely Used

The International Gemological Institute (IGI) is the largest independent gemological laboratory in the world. Founded in 1975, IGI is known for its extensive network of labs across multiple countries and its fast turnaround times.

IGI certificates are highly regarded in the jewelry industry and are particularly common for lab-grown diamonds. They provide the same fundamental grading information as GIA reports and are considered reliable and consistent.

GIA vs IGI: What Is the Difference?

In terms of the actual grading criteria, both laboratories use the same 4 Cs standard. The difference lies in their reputation, pricing, and market positioning:

  • GIA is older, more prestigious, and tends to be stricter in its assessments. A GIA grade is often considered the benchmark.
  • IGI is extremely reliable and widely used, especially for lab-grown diamonds. The grades may be slightly more generous than GIA, which is why some trade insiders perceive a "GIA premium."

Why Certification Matters

Without a certificate, you are relying solely on the seller word. A certificate gives you:

  • Confidence that the diamond matches the seller description
  • Proof of quality for insurance and resale purposes
  • Protection against overpaying for a lower-grade stone

Always insist on a certificate before purchasing any diamond. Aranc provides IGI or GIA certification with every diamond we sell.
