A diamond certificate (also called a grading report) is the definitive record of a diamond is quality. It tells you exactly what you are buying, verified by an independent gemological laboratory. Without one, you are relying on the seller is word. With one, you have scientific proof. This guide explains why certifications matter, who issues them, and how to use them when buying a diamond.
Diamond grading is not regulated. Any company can put a diamond in a ring and call it VS1 or G color or Excellent cut, regardless of whether it actually meets those standards. Without an independent laboratory is assessment, those claims are meaningless marketing.
A certificate from GIA or IGI provides:
GIA is the most respected and widely recognized gemological laboratory in the world. Founded in 1931, it developed the 4 Cs grading system that is now the global standard. GIA is considered the benchmark for diamond grading, and its standards are widely regarded as the strictest in the industry.
For mined diamonds, GIA reports are the industry standard. Virtually every significant mined diamond over 0.50 carats comes with a GIA report. If you are buying a mined diamond and it does not have a GIA certificate, be cautious.
GIA also grades lab-grown diamonds and has specific reporting standards for them. Their reports include a comment disclosing that the diamond is laboratory-grown.
IGI is the largest gemological laboratory by volume and the dominant certifier of lab-grown diamonds. Based in Antwerp, with laboratories worldwide, IGI grades more diamonds than any other laboratory.
For lab-grown diamonds, IGI reports are the most common. They follow similar standards to GIA, though some buyers consider IGI grading slightly more conservative in some areas.
IGI also grades mined diamonds and is widely accepted in the jewelry industry. A diamond with an IGI certificate is not inferior to one with a GIA certificate—IGI is a legitimate, respected laboratory.
A typical GIA or IGI certificate includes:
Every certificate has a unique report number. This number should match the inscription on the diamond is girdle (if inscribed) and should be verifiable on the laboratory is website. If the numbers do not match, something is wrong.
GIA reports can be verified at reportcheck.gia.edu. IGI reports can be verified at igi.org. Always verify before purchasing. This confirms the certificate is genuine and the diamond matches the report.
The certificate tells you the objective facts about a diamond. It does not tell you whether the diamond is beautiful—that requires looking at it. Use the certificate to compare diamonds objectively and to confirm the seller is descriptions are accurate.
Some jewelers offer in-house grading or certification from smaller, less reputable laboratories. These are not equivalent to GIA or IGI certificates. In-house grading is not independent and may be biased in the seller is favor. Smaller laboratories may have lower standards or less consistent grading.
Always ask which laboratory issued the certificate. If the seller cannot tell you, or if the laboratory is not GIA or IGI, be very cautious. A discount that seems attractive may reflect inflated grading rather than genuine value.
Jewelry stores have an economic incentive to grade diamonds generously. A diamond graded SI1 by the seller might be graded VS2 by GIA. The seller is grading is not malicious—it is simply human nature to see what you want to see when money is involved.
An independent certificate removes this conflict of interest. When GIA says a diamond is VS1, that is an independent, verified assessment. When the seller says the same diamond is VS1, it is an unverified claim.
Lab-grown diamond certificates from GIA and IGI use the same 4 Cs grading standards as mined diamonds. However, they include an additional disclosure that the diamond is laboratory-grown. This is required by Federal Trade Commission guidelines in the United States.
Both GIA and IGI issue laboratory-grown diamond reports. The grading standards are equivalent to those used for mined diamonds. A VS1 graded by IGI on a lab-grown diamond means the same as a VS1 graded by GIA on a mined diamond.
